There are many kinds of toilets in Uganda, but they can basically be divided into 3 categories:
1. Pit latrines. This is simply a deep hole in the ground, covered with a cement slab that has a hole in the middle for you to squat over. It can be inside a small grass-thatched hut or in a brick building like this one:
2. Squatty potties connected to plumbing.
3. Western-style toilets.
There are usually more fun creatures inside an outdoor latrine (like bats, cockroaches, giant flat spiders...), but we have found frogs inside the shower before. (luckily not in the toilet)
The latrine doesn't have a door. Is that typical? Also, no toilet paper. How does that work?

A lot of latrines in the village don't have a door because the opening is facing away from the house. So I just try to be very obvious heading there, hoping people notice it's occupied! We carry our own toilet paper, just in case, but sometimes people have old pieces of notebook paper in there for that purpose.

I saw a frog (maybe toad) just like the green one you pictured, on an ATM while we were there. fun memories
ReplyDeleteAwful small hole to aim for in the latrine. I’ve never attempted going potty in different positions. The thought doesn’t excite me if I’m honest. And I agree how does one deal with no paper?
ReplyDeleteApparently it is healthier for ones body to squat over the toilet :) But in our house, the toilets are Western and there is toilet paper

DeleteThat’s interesting! I’ve never used a sqatty potty yet, but they help make sense when you see signs telling people not to climb on top of the western toilet! :-)
